Visual Development

For my visual development class the assignment was pretty straightforward: Choose a story and get to work. Against my teacher's advice, I chose my own story. It was a little story I worked up over the summer. I haven't developed it very much as it's mostly on par with a basic comic book hero origin story. Long story short, she was a fantastic singer, who got tortured and raped, and turned into a schizophrenic vigilante. The first piece is the same character in her two different personae. The next three are some designs, one signature costume for combat, and a casual and formal design. The next three are a second character who is her good friend, a former female body builder, who is a functioning lunatic. I did a simple turnaround for the first and some style studies. Since I was trying to find a way to speed up my workflow, I looked at some animation styles and settled somewhere between the style of Winx Club, the Bruce Timm style, and some of my own style. The second to last piece was a male character, since everyone in my class advised me to start drawing some males. I made him as the former bodybuilder's older brother and only sane person, because I liked the idea of a Huge girl and Tiny guy relationship. The final pieces are fully rendered portraits I did for my digital paint class.

Illustration 3: Painter/Photoshop

Finally I got into a class that was exactly what I was looking for. 100% digital paint with lots of freedom of style. We spent a lot of time on the assignments though, about 3-4 weeks per. The first assignment was a still life, with a story without any human presence. The second was an environmental piece. The third was a book cover or splash/loading screen image.

Personal Pieces

Here are a few pieces done in my spare time, usually over summer vacations. The first is a piece that was done many years ago when I was teaching myself photoshop. After spending time at the Academy of Art I revisited it with new techniques for the second piece. The third, fourth, and fifth pieces were done a couple years ago over a summer vacation. The sixth piece was inspired by the fifth, and I decided to use the likeness of Xena actress Hudson Leick. The seventh piece was a redesign of my Digital Illustration character with some input from some users on ConceptArt.org. The final piece was done with similar input.

Digital Illustration

During my second semester I took a digital illustration class, which gave me a chance to paint in photoshop. The first assignment was a character design and the second was to place that character in an environment.

Intermediate Anatomy

Two of our big assignments from Intermediate Anatomy were a multi figure assignment and another composition for the final. We could do anything as long as it showed anatomical knowledge.

Illustration 2 Final

Illustration 2 was primarily a Watercolor course but with only one week for the final assignment our teacher was generous enough to give us the choice of any medium so I chose digital. The assignment was to take a classic folk tale and make a book cover for it in any style.

Fantastic Figure

This class was rather fun in that we drew from life but we had the freedom to exaggerate the poses and proportions. The first assignment here was our own rendition of Red Riding Hood. The second was 3+ figures with at least 2 of them physically interacting. The final was a simple heroic figure.

Illustration 3

One of our Illustration 3 assignments was to crate a poster for a public event in San Francisco. I chose Oktoberfest.
